Cupping Therapy
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping or decompression therapy is a form of alternative medicine where cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This suction is believed to increase blood flow, promote healing, and provide various other health benefits.
During a cupping therapy session, a practitioner places cups on the patient's skin and uses either heat or a suction device to create a vacuum inside the cup. This vacuum draws the skin and underlying tissue upward, possibly creating a raised, reddish circular mark or "cupping bruise." However, not all people may bruise, and the presence of the bruise alone should not dictate effectiveness.
Cupping therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions such as muscle tension, back pain, migraines, and respiratory problems. It is also sometimes used as a form of relaxation and to improve overall wellbeing. It is important to note that cupping therapy should only be performed by a trained and licensed practitioner, as improper technique or application of the cups can result in injury or other negative effects.
At Bodhi PT, we use a suction device to administer the cups and can be used for overall wellness or to help treat musculoskeletal issues as evaluated by your physical therapist. If applicable, massage can also be used during your session to help promote blood flow and promote relaxation.
